I continue to wonder about what is unique and revealing in this work? Deneau seems to show all around town but for landscape painting I am not challenged or enlightened or anything.
This painter graces us with the light and color of urban life. The work is refreshingly free of the posturing and irony of so much contemporary painting. She actually looks at the world! In this work paint and gesture are a means of establishing a particular space and a specific time. She sees the entire world via time and space, yet knows that a painter must also be selective. This is the stuff of western art: Nature is wrestled into pictorial space to suggest that destiny awaits only a true understanding of things as they are. All serious painters will benefit from the lessons offered in this work.
There was a story in the paper a year or two ago. She's the one who has a Detroit themed rumpus room in her distant suburban house, complete with a city manhole cover that's become part of a coffee table. It's not as weird as it sounds. I live in Detroit and keep bales of hay in my apartment.
I appreciate the style of the artist.. but some things just seem off in the drawing...unintentionally. I noticed that in the painting she had in the library building at CCS it came across as trying to be realisticly spacial, but not quite hitting the mark, and not far enough away from the mark to be seen as intentional. I'm not particularly excited by this work either but that's just my personal preference. I can't really say why at this point....Maybe I'm just tired of cityscapes especially in Detroit, where artists cling to this urban decay theme especially in photography.
If you're talking about the bus that looks like it has a flat tire, it was really like that. I've been on that bus. The driver threw me off and wouldn't give me a transfer.

right. I realized she's not going for urban decay, I was referring to other artists that do. But from my perspective, she is trying to capture the essence of detroit in these paintings, and you can't really ignore the fact that detroit is a dead city. At least for now. So even by painting a bus with a flat tire, it causes me to see the decay of the city. Why can't we just get buses that are safe? why can't we get some reliable public transportation like a subway system or something? it's all part of Detroit. I repect the vision, but I'm a little tired of it. Maybe just tired of cityscapes in general. Like i said, it's all just a personal preference and knowing me I'm bound to come around full circle at some point. I used to hate landscape paintings, until I found myself abstracting the landscape all the time for example.

My advice to them was that they start a rock band.
As I understand it, Ikea came with a public transit system... some nice brand spaking new shiney red wheeled trolleys... I feel better knowing that people in Canton can get back and forth to Ikea without parking hassle... Those are excellent choices.
possibly you are right, but the fact of the matter is, as a CCS student I do care about space. I just don't care about it in a literal sense. there's no chance of moving forward if we're always expected to paint what we see. That's boring to me. I chose to paint the way I do not because it's real, but because it pleases me, and I can talk about whatever I want and not be confined to a reference picture. And in fact, I do look at Cezanne quite a bit. I just bought a Cezanne book in fact and I am about to leave in a month to go study in Aix en Provence where Cezanne spent a lot of time mastering his craft. And my abstract work actually was sparked by the work of picasso. So don't assume that we don't look at these pivitol artists just because our work isn't stuck in 1910.

I'm just sitting here in astonishment. You're a teacher?! Jesus Christ! Brings back a conversation I was having with the director of a lit.program the other week... I asked if he was ever concerned about the future of education, especially the degrading quality... I really think you should start a rock band yourself, or a lawn care company, or do anything but teach with an attitude like that. Boxed up and self-obsorbed. Yuck.
There does not seem to be any definite light source here but a jumble. Got the patented detroit grey and strange ambient shadows in street that are very strong at times.

My biggest complaint with CCS are the faculty... there are some great faculty! Then there are some faculty that discourage students because they (the teachers) can't get over their own egos and secret competitive agendas... they don't know how to be teachers. If your advice to a maleable student is to go start a rock band... I just don't think that that person should be allowed within 50 feet of teaching. It's just scandelous. And to imply that the CCS students or curriculae doesn't afford a long, hard look at Cezanne, Matisse, and Picasso is so annoying. So, I stand by my harsh words. Go start a rock band... if rock and roll will have you, and take a copy of Ayn Rand with you.

I don't think the bus has a flat tire but rather a slight expressive angle to the bus.
I am tired of seeing amateurs refine their work in the galleries while others further along are out there somewhere else.
