I think this is a beautifully done piece. I only regret that I can only look at it on my computer screen. There is a lot going on in the image, which I love in art. The rich blues remind me of porcelain china, and the grid pattern (sorry, I can't really tell) looks like these are actually painted tiles, making up a fascinating mosaic. The parallelism between the landscape and the child seems the perfect juxtaposition. Again, it may be the computer screen, but there seems to be an iridescence, like an underexposed photograph. This piece is unusual, in a great way, and unique, and wonderful. Keep up the interesting work Hartmut, you're great!

who's gonna tell this guy that painting is dead?!

you only find paint at art fairs and detroit galleries.

it reeks of oil and turpentine and so the smell of a dead medium.

what makes a good painting (if there can still be such a thing)?

and does this qualify in any way?

Painting isn't "dead in Detroit" if you've got artists like "this guy".

What makes this good art anyway? Seriously. From vacuum cleaners to button art...

How does anyone decide if this is a great painting or not?

(And certainly not by going to Ann's Answer-Man Book of Art Criticim)

The Critique Handbook that Ann refers to occasionally is not a bad book, in fact, it is quite helpful. It breaks down modes of observation into an understandable format, and also discusses the dynamics of reviews in situations such as studio classrooms.

Guide book or not, I like the question posed: What makes this good art or not?

Let's start there and try to find our way through this underlying thread of so many bloggers' comments here (from vacuums to buttons...as someone put it).

all you have to do is freaking put faith in it, believe that whatever you are looking at is beautiful art, stop judging

its all fashion - taste/sentiment
there are more than one good
all good is valid correct good
and bad...

time and shared sentiment carve "our" good - untillthen

and judge! decide

what a misfire:
..."time and shared sentiment carve "our" good - until then
freaking put faith in it, believe that whatever you are looking at is beautiful art."

au contraire, mon frere -- this art exists now, it's contemporary.... giving it time to be good doesn't always work, first because most of it disappears with time and not always because it wasn't good enough, considering marketing, and more often due to its placement in the market (detroit exists outside this one), politics of time etc; and second because new art is meant for the moment, it only exists as pure art for that first moment ... in and of its time it becomes saddled with labels and interpretations over time. the pure experience is the first and without all that gathered debris you call shared sentiment.

I have seen this artist's work about town for several years. I understand he is originally fomr Europe, Koln I think. I have also seen work coming out of Germany at shows in NYC and think his work stands well beside it. I think he should be showing his work in Chicago and NYC. Definitely Berlin. Detroit may be good for Detroit artists. But someone with this talent needs to be seen by the greater world.

Sounds like a quote from Bizarro Superman.

to the doubter

thought maybe you would like to know the definition of sentiment?

sen·ti·ment(snt-mnt)n.

1. A thought, view, or attitude, especially one based mainly on emotion instead of reason. See Synonyms at feeling. See Synonyms at opinion.

i was refering to "good" in the objective sense - the critical sense.

and time does not equal history.

there seemed to be some question as to what makes something "good" - if "good" is sentiment/taste/subjective then all "goods" would be correct and all "bads" would be correct - which brings us again to whats good?

let me be clear here for you - regardless of our subjective individual experiences with "the moment, it only exists as pure art for that first moment" we still need to answer the question what makes something good? In time shared sentiment collects leading to a clearer picture of a works validity and relavance beyond the artist, fashion, and your rediculous metaphysical imediacy theory.

again
freaking put faith in it, believe that whatever you are looking at is beautiful art.

at least untill we decide.

"believe..." and "faith..."

Okay then. And let's not talk blind faith here, or why not just wear blindfolds when we go into a gallery.

So every viewer creates a belief-system with a work of art. If they cannot, then the art has failed ... not the viewer. And the art is bad. And it goes to art-hell.

If it is good, and the viewer believes such, it goes to heaven.

I believe Helmut's piece is in heaven. It's that simple.

In your belief system you believe all art goes to heaven first, but then later some may be sent to hell... due to shared-sentiment and time. That's just crummy all around.

i go with duchamp: if all art is deemed good, then none of it is good.

i think im being misunderstood

i don't mean believe/faith literaly

i mean believe/faith as in give it a chance - like trust

built in to my argument is the freedom for you to be wrong

anyway, i give up
we're all right - have fun

to quick-draw conclusions: its not art ...

are talking about hartmut's painting? then you are nuts.

if the guy were back in berlin, he'd own the town with his painting.

Holy Crap. I may be joining this conversation a little late, but painting is not dead. When are people going to realize they sound like naive assholes when they say that?

The absurd idea that “painting is dead” has been around for decades while painting itself continues to thrive. The staying power of this idea is probably due to the incredible surplus of sophomoric individuals, as well as insecure artists trying to find their creative identity and lashing out at media different than their own.

Painting is a mode of communication and expression. Like other such modes (sculpture, video, etc.) it has its strengths and limitations, as well as a long history that affects the way it operates. The creation of new technologies and media rarely, if ever, makes older media obsolete in the art world. It can, however change other media’s place in the world, the way photography did for painting. Television (or “talkies” for that matter) did not kill books. Sure, the 3-D IMAX theatre can give me an experience that curling up with a good book cannot, but that certainly doesn’t make it better or make reading obsolete.

“The Triumph of Painting” show at the Saatchi Gallery is just one example proving that painting is not only a viable mode of communication and artistic expression (an obvious truth) but also a potent aspect of the contemporary art world.

So please, no more comments about painting being dead, unless you have an undying desire to make yourself look like an uneducated nincompoop.

Nice work Hartmut!

In the same way that "that's not art" is no longer valid criticism, "that's bad art" should and will become crass and a sign of ignorant traditionalism.

When art is good for one thing it is bad for another. The broadest acceptable negative statement that can still be made about a work of art is, "it bores me."

All comments on the success of art must be defined by the critic. For example: This work isn't likely to sell, or This work is redundant.
