I think artwork that is often described as being pretentious tends to be conceptual in nature and doesn't rely on artistic beauty to convey its meaning or content
In reaction to this work you'll sometimes here the dreaded "I don't get it," which assumes its only for the "in crowd" to understand.
Hence the "elitist" name that often gets tagged to the contemporary art world along with pretentious.

The term "pretentious" seems to be creeping into both free weeklies (Metro and Real) to describe anything that drunks at a party can't dance to or enjoy looking at. And if you think "conceptual" art evades beauty...you haven't seen much "conceptual" art.
